THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK

Homework: Week 3 Autumn Year 4
SPELLINGS
I have given each child a spelling and reading test of medium frequency words for Year 4/5. These are words which they use a lot in writing and reading too. I have highlighted the words that each child was not able to read or spell- please could you work with your child to help them practice spelling and reading the words they are unsure of. We will be focussing on these words this term and will have another spelling and reading test just after half term for these words.
Please note: the spelling test was JUST THE FIRST COLUMN OF 29 words – if they have got all or nearly all of these words correct please focus on the next two columns to support their learning in this important area of writing.

TOPIC/WRITTEN WORK
If Roald Dahl was alive today, what 5 questions would you ask him? Be imaginative – there are dojos for original questions!

MATHS - Number work
We will keep on practicing our Learn its – this week focus on adding 1 to a number. I know this sounds easy but you need to be able to recall this number fact INSTANTLY!
1+1
2+1
3+1
All the way up to 9+1. Again these can be used for other number facts – 200 + 100, 2/10 + 1/10, 20 + 10 and so on!

GOOD TO BE GREEN

Well done all of Sycamore for keeping your green card all week- just a reminder to all pupils and parents, if you are given a good to be green token then on Monday you can bring in a pair of slippers OR a small teddy. You can wear the slippers in the school, but don't wear them to school as you will need shoes for playtime!

Reading in sycamore class

7th September 2016
Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please find outlined below a quick guide to reading in Year 4. It is such an important skill to develop and there has been a great deal of research that has taken place that highlights the benefits of ‘reading for enjoyment’ in later life.

The majority of teaching reading will take place as group guided reading sessions. The pupils will work in close ability groups to read a given text/ extract and focus on different skills to suit their needs. Reading diaries will be filled in linked to these texts. When time in the curriculum allows it, individual readers will also be listened to.

Please can your son/ daughter also bring in a reading book to read at certain times during the day. This book can be the school scheme books or a book of their choice. This can be kept in school or taken home and brought back each day. One of the activities during the group guided reading sessions will be independent reading so a book that they are enjoying and able to access will be useful. We do have books in the library if this is not possible.

Any time spent reading with your child is extremely beneficial to their development. Just 5-10 minutes a day reading to each other, talking about books can have an impact on their development. It is better to read regularly than one long burst every now and then. Pontypridd library is obviously a great source of books and activities linked to reading development.

If you have any queries I am usually available in the classroom after school.

Our P.E days will be on Monday and Wednesday this term. Please can you ensure that all pupils make every effort to wear their kits into school for this essential area of child development.

Reading will take place both individually and as part of group reading. Year 4 children are currently being assessed to gain a greater understanding of their individual needs in this area. Any extra reading is a huge benefit to your child - sharing a book daily will make a huge difference in their understanding and enjoyment. Times tables are also an important part of numerical development. Please support your child in learning these, they will be tested and their progress monitored throughout the year!

Homework will be given out either on Thursday or Friday, starting next week, to be returned by Wednesday unless stated.

Water bottles and a healthy snack may also be brought in to school.

If you have any queries I am usually available in the classroom after school. Thank you for your support and I look forward to a busy and productive autumn term.

Yours faithfully,

Mr C Munday
